3 Things You Don’t Know

Transformation Within: Facial Aging from Inside Out

Changes of Facial Aging

1. Loss of Facial Volume

One of the key changes in facial aging is loss of volume, which affects the underlying structures that provide support and definition to the face.

  1. Bone Resorption ◦ Bone density decreases over time, leading to changes in facial structures ◦ Most common areas are loss of bone volume in the jaw and cheeks ◦ Leading to less defined jaws and facial skin sagging with decreased facial height

  2. Decreased Fat Pad Volume ◦ Fat pads in the face gradually shrink and descend ◦ Resulting in loss of fullness in areas such as cheeks, under eyes and temples ◦ Contributing to a hollowed and sunken appearance

  3. Thinning of Subcutaneous Fat ◦ Subcutaneous fat is a layer under the skin that helps to smooth and plump the skin ◦ With aging, it shrinks and diminishes ◦ Producing fine lines and wrinkles

2. Development of Wrinkles and Fine Lines

Wrinkles and fine lines are common signs of facial aging, reflecting on the loss of elasticity and decreased collagen production.

  1. Dynamic Wrinkles ◦ Can also be known as “expression lines” ◦ Caused by repeated muscle contraction that become more prominent and visible over time ◦ Examples: Forehead lines and lines at the corner of the eyes (Crow’s feet)

  2. Static Wrinkles ◦ Wrinkles that are visible even when the face is at rest ◦ Caused by loss of collagen and elastin fibers ◦ Examples: Marionette line (lines from corners of the mouth downwards), Nasolabial fold (lines from the nose to corners of the mouth)

3. Skin Texture and Tone Changes

Aging process also affects the texture and tone of the skin

  1. Uneven Texture ◦ Skin texture become rougher and uneven ◦ Due to slower cell turnover and accumulation of dead cells ◦ Leads to a dull skin complexion

  2. Pigmentation Irregularities ◦ Age spots, also known as sun spots, can develop as a result of sun exposure and uneven distribution of melanin ◦ These darkened areas contribute to uneven skin tone

  3. Loss of Skin Elasticity ◦ Decreased production of collagen and elastin fibers leads to loss of skin elasticity ◦ Skin becomes thinner ◦ Prone to sagging and drooping ◦ Particularly over the area of cheeks and jawline

Aging process has a profound impact on the face, resulting in a multitude of changes that results in making us look more tired and less attractive. Understanding these changes can help us to appreciate the complexities of facial changes. While aging is a natural part of life, embracing these changes and taking proactive steps to take care of our skin can help us age gracefully and confidently.
