CLEAR SKIN STARTS WITH YOUR PLATE: The Surprising Link Between ACNE and DIET.

"From Ac-Nay(Acne) to Ac-Yay!"

What, Where, Why Acne Vulgaris?

Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, oily skin, and possibly scarring. Acne most commonly occurs on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulder, where our oil glands are active.

Several factors play a role in the development of acne, including genetics and hormonal changes. However, diet is increasingly recognized as an important factor that can affect the severity and frequency of acne breakouts.

From Plate to Pimple

The relationship between diet and acne is complex and not yet fully understood. A diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates and not to forget the fast trend of fast food can trigger acne breakouts by increasing insulin levels and insulin-like growth factors, which stimulate androgen production and sebum (oil) production. Excess sebum production can clog skin pores and lead to the development of acne and bacterial infection.

In addition, diets high in dairy products, particularly milk, have been shown to increase the risk of acne. Researchers believe this may be due to the presence of hormones in milk, which can stimulate sebum production to cause acne development.

From the Kitchen to the Bathroom: Nourish your Skin

Always pay attention to what you put into your mouth. Often in fitness, we always said, “You are what you eat”, same goes for your skin health. We should always be aware of what kind of diet that will actually nourish our skin. There is a list of diets like fresh vegetables and fruits that are high in antioxidants to support our skin health and collagen production.

Lean protein provides all the necessary amino acids for collagen and keratin formation in our skin. Choose fish, poultry beans, and eggs that are all high in protein. Eggs are especially beneficial as it is easy to prepare and it is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which can reduce inflammation and support skin health. It can also be found in fish, nuts, and seeds.

Hydration is key! Water helps to maintain hydrated skin which promotes skin health and prevents excess oil production that can lead to acne. When skin is dehydrated, the oil glands work overtime to compensate and produce more oil. This can clog pores and trigger breakouts.

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps keep skin hydrated and prevents the overproduction of oil. Water also helps flush toxins out of the body that can contribute to acne breakouts.

Limits alcohol and caffeine consumption. Overconsumption of alcohol and caffeinated drinks can dehydrate our skin and stimulate excess sebum production and it also disrupts our sleep. Always remember moderation is the key.
