Mesobotox: A Gentle Touch for Lasting Beauty

What is Mesobotox?

Mesobotox is an innovative treatment that employs multiple microdroplets of botulinum toxin (BoNT) at lower concentrations. Its primary objective is to achieve the relaxation of fine lines and rhytide (early manifestations of wrinkles), all without the undesired outcome of a "frozen" or "plastic" appearance. In addition to its effectiveness in facial rejuvenation, this technique has found utility in addressing concerns such as hyperhidrosis, seborrhoea, and keloids. Typically, it is administered through mesotherapy, a specialized injection technique targeting the superficial muscle fibers of the skin.

Distinguishing Botox from Mesobotox

Traditional Botox is administered deep into the muscle fibers attached to facial bones, resulting in muscle relaxation and, consequently, the reduction of dynamic wrinkles' severity. Conversely, mesobotox works by inhibiting the "pulling" effects of superficial muscle fibers on the skin, while preserving the function of the deeper muscle fibers, thereby imparting a refreshed appearance to the face.

Application of Mesobotox for Facelift

Facial aging is characterized by an imbalance between the levator (lifting) and depressor (sagging) muscles involved in facial expressions, compounded by the relentless force of gravity, leading to facial drooping and sagging when depressor muscles predominate. Mesobotox is instrumental in rebalancing these muscles, weakening the downward pull exerted by the depressors and allowing the levators (opposing muscles) to elevate the skin. Its superficial injection approach makes it a favored method, especially in periorbital rejuvenation (Iranmanesh, B. et al., 2022).

The Nefertiti Lift, often referred to when redefining facial and neck contours, draws its name from the ancient Egyptian Queen Nefertiti, renowned for her long and graceful neck. This technique involves mesobotox injections into the platysma and its posterior band to counteract the depressor effect on the cheeks. However, it may not be suitable for individuals with greater skin laxity and less pronounced posterior bands.

Mesobotox is most indicated when early signs of aging in the lower face and neck do not warrant the invasiveness and extent of surgical facelift procedures (Wanitphakdeedecha, R. et al.,2020). It can be effectively combined with other skin-tightening devices and therapies.

The toxins used in mesobotox are no different from traditional Botox, resulting in typical results lasting approximately 4 to 6 months. This translates to 2 to 3 repeated sessions per year for maintenance.

Potential Side Effects

Mesobotox appears to have minimal observable side effects, with the primary exception being the subjective variation in pain susceptibility.Interestingly, when administered to the forehead area, the mesobotox technique typically results in less discomfort than traditional methods. Additionally, the superficial injection levels of the mesobotox technique tend to result in less bruising compared to conventional methods. Some reported transient after effects in the literature include a slight feeling of stiffness in the forehead area and mild weakness in the periorbital muscles.

“Did you know that Mesotox can also be beneficial for acne and oil control?”

BoNT is known to reduce sebaceous gland activity, subsequently improving seborrhea and minimizing pore size (Kaur, I., 2022). It has been proposed as a maintenance treatment for acne-prone skin, as mesobotox provides even coverage, preventing compensatory sebum production in untreated areas.

The "Radiant Glow"

Mesobotox induces muscle relaxation that controls lymphatic channels, promoting fluid retention in the compact dermis (Seo, K. K., 2005). This effect imparts a luminous appearance to the face, typically lasting for three months. Additionally, the microinjuries from mesotherapy stimulate neocollagenesis, the process of forming new collagen. In combination with relaxed muscles, the volume effect from fluid retention, and the new collagen formation, mesobotox provides a facelift effect that complements its other benefits.
