The Vampire Facial: How it works and Benefits?

"Let the Power of Your Own Blood Work the Magic to Rejuvenate and Restore Your Youthful Glow"

Introduction

Platelet rich plasma therapy (PRP), commonly known as the “vampire facial” refers to a n aesthetic procedure in which a patient’s own platelet rich plasma is injected into the skin. PRP is processed from the blood sample taken from patient’s vein and it contains concentrated growth factors that will promote skin rejuvenation. PRP injections aim to reduce any signs of aging and achieve a more youthful and radiant appearance. It can also be used in conjunction with microneedling that creates micro-punctures over the skin so that PRP can be absorbed into the skin for even better results.

Microneedling

Microneedling, or percutaneous collagen induction therapy is a form of therapy that utilizes instruments containing rows of fine thin needles that penetrate the deeper layer of skin, known as dermis, to a uniform depth, creating a controlled skin injury. It is a popular treatment for reducing the appearance of scars, wrinkles and signs of aging, and more popularly, to refine pore sizes.

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling creates micro-injuries in the dermis. This controlled skin injury induces rapidly healing micro-punctures with stimulation of collagen and elastic fibers production, resulting in skin remodeling. This leads to skin rejuvenation, scar reduction and smoothening of wrinkles. The micro-injuries also create microscopic channels that allow better absorption of topical treatments. Different sized and shaped needles are used for different treatments ranging from 0.5mm to 3mm that we are offering in our clinic.

Combined treatment of Microneedling with Topical Agents

Microneedling is often combined with platelet rich plasma (PRP) or platelet rich fibrin (PRF) to enhance the treatment effects. PRP and PRF contain growth factors and cytokines that stimulate collagen production and speed healing.

What are the differences between PRP and PRF?

Both platelet rich plasma (PRP) and platelet rich fibrin (PRF) are prepared by obtaining the patient’s own blood and centrifuged to separate the platelet rich plasma from other blood components.

For harvesting of PRP, we add anticoagulants to produce these liquid growth factors from the patient's plasma. In contrast, PRF is produced without any anticoagulants, resulting in higher concentration of growth factors, and PRF forms a biological fibrin mesh under your skin, which translates to better aesthetic outcomes in terms of volumization and support. The flip side of this is, the PRF tends to be a tougher liquid growth factor to handle due to clotting time factors. Only experienced aesthetic doctors manage this treatment effectively due to the accuracy and speed required.

How PRP and PRF helps in tissue healing and regeneration?

PRP and PRF contain a pool of growth factors and cytokines that are vital for tissue healing and regeneration. They promote cell proliferation, collagen synthesis, angiogenesis and healing. Your skin grows younger overtime with regular vampire facelift, literally!

Indications of Microneedling with PRP or PRF

Skin rejuvenation

PRP and PRF can enhance collagen synthesis and cell regeneration in the skin, leading to smoother and tighter skin with less wrinkles. They are often used in adjunct to laser therapy and microdermabrasion for better skin rejuvenation and anti aging effects.

Acne Scars

PRP and PRF may improve acne scars by enhancing and stimulating the production of collagen and elastin for skin remodeling. This effect can help to flatten out acne scars but usually it may require other treatment modalities to enhance the skin regeneration effects such as cosmetic laser therapy and microdermabrasion. PRF can also be used as a growth factor in conjunction with Subcision therapy to effectively resurface atrophic scars.

Dark Eye circles

PRP and PRF are also used to reduce or lighten the appearance of dark circles by increasing collagen production and improving skin tone and pigmentation, as well as increasing undereye volume in cases of sunken lid cheek junction

Platelet-Rich Plasma or Platelet-Rich Fibrin are minimally invasive procedure with little to no downtime. It is considered extremely safe with multiple benefits when performed by trained aesthetic professionals.
